THE MUSEUM BECOMES A THEATER: SOFOCLE’S ANTIGONE

On the occasion of the International Museum Day organized by ICOM, which will be held on Wednesday 18 May, the Irpinia Museum will become a place of discovery of the past through the use of a modern language, hosting the traveling theatrical show in the rooms and external courtyards of the Bourbon prison. , Sophocles’ Antigone.
The tragedy will be staged by a group of students of the scientific high school “P.S. Mancini ”of Avellino. The project is part of an extracurricular educational training program aimed at pupils in the fourth grade of the high school. The work will be carried out in an itinerant form: the public, guided by ciceroni (pupils), crosses the places of the Irpinia Museum and encounters, along the way, the most important scenes of Sophocles’ Antigone.

The project

The activities of this theatrical laboratory are part of a national operational program for the school (PON) and involve 25 students of the fourth grades of the P.S. Mancini di Avellino, led by teacher Anna de Cunzo, project representative. The activities of the theatrical workshop aim to stimulate creativity as a personal path of each, as an exchange of ideas, learning and social integration.
Participants were involved in the discovery of art as a union of theater, music and dance through the preparation and realization of a show. Professionals specialized in the various artistic disciplines have enriched the cultural bases of the students through acting activities combined with moments of creative writing, which have led to the drafting of a script of one of the most famous tragedies of ancient theater, using new languages and new forms of expression.
Pupils chose, following their talent and personal skills, to interpret roles (actors, dancers) or participate in the creation of the play (set designers, costume designers, make-up artists). Some students will take on the role of “ciceroni”, presenting to the public not only the tragedy, but also the history and places of the host structure.

Thus, the Bourbon prison of Avellino will become the stage of a theater for an afternoon!
