A YEAR OF EXHIBITIONS AT THE IRPINO MUSEUM

IRPINO MUSEUM
MONUMENTAL BOURBONIC PRISON COMPLEX
The Irpino Museum, for the second year, is preparing to welcome visitors with an intense program of exhibitions, designed to satisfy the knowledge and curiosity of an increasingly vast and diversified audience.
In fact, from Friday 5 April, the cycle of “A year of exhibitions at the Irpino Museum” starts again, promoted by the Province of Avellino with the Technical-Scientific Coordination of the Irpino Museum and the “S. and G. Capone”, in collaboration with local and non-local artists, associations and art galleries.
5 exhibitions follow one another over the course of a year and will once again bring contemporary art to the exhibition rooms and beyond of the Irpino Museum, at the evocative location of the Bourbon prison of Avellino.

The first exhibition scheduled will be ”il Suspetto”, curated by Rebecca Russo, which will be inaugurated on Friday 5 April. The idea for this exhibition is inspired by Alfred Hitchcock’s film of the same name and focuses mainly on the themes of toxic relationships and perverse narcissism. It will be a collective show that brings together a large number of works of painting, photography and installations that have, directly or indirectly, something important to say about pathological narcissism and its harmful effects on relationships. The exhibition will be open to visitors until May 31st.

From 7 June, the second scheduled appointment will be with “Anatomy of the Void”, a solo exhibition by Cristina Cianci curated by Michelangelo Giovinale. In this exhibition, which can be visited until 27 July, the artist moves in a very narrow space of research, between the visible and the invisible, in the deep excavation of loss, where the pain of the world and ours meet together with the remains. The void is a space devoid of matter, yet in her more than twenty-year practice Cristina Cianci, as the curator Giovinale says, has tried to contain it through the manipulation of matter, remaining faithful to the use of papier-mâché which has taken on a distinctive character of her Opera.

Starting from August 2nd, the exhibition rooms will host the exhibition “Art and Time” by Ettore de Concillis, a painter well known in the artistic panorama of Avellino and beyond. The exhibition itinerary, on display until 28 September, will retrace an intense and committed artistic career from a social and political point of view, that of de Conciliis, who, starting from the Mural of Peace in Avellino (1965), where for the first time the images of the peasants of southern Italy fighting against the latifundium enter a church, up to the very recent interventions (2020), in Rome, for the altarpieces of the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri with the diptych Le Pale of the Mediterranean. Some unrealized projects which mainly concern the city of Avellino will also be visible.

The month of October will be characterized by the inauguration of two exhibitions.
On October 4th, Kaleidoscopio Denmark will be staged, curated by Andrea Del Guercio. A comprehensive exhibition dedicated to those artistic personalities who can reveal Denmark’s contemporary heritage. A journey through several generations, from emerging young people to Masters, representatives of that highly ‘expressive’ area that marks the far north of Western Europe. From painting to sculpture, from graphics to video art and installations, this exhibition, which will end on November 30, will be a story and a discovery of this geographical-cultural area.

From 18 October, in the isolation cells, visitors will be able to admire the photographic exhibition ”TOKAI. THE STREET CHILDREN OF DHAKA” by Marco Giannatasio which can be visited until 4 January 2025. A photographic reportage, which closes the program of A year of exhibitions at the Irpino Museum, in the name and in support of the children of Dhaka, Bangladesh. In this place, drug use is widespread, especially the most miserable of them, glue, used by even very young children, the so-called “Tokai”. It is estimated that in Dhaka alone there are over 60,000 abandoned children. The use of these substances, combined with the impossibility of accessing medical care, even basic, causes very high mortality among them. The photographer created these images by collaborating with small NGOs, born under the pressure of the Xaverian missionaries, who yes

are concerned with providing shelter to these children, the possibility of studying, or help in starting a job that can provide them with the minimum means of subsistence.
